News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Sisters Rotary Club invites the community to get in the holiday spirit this coming Sunday at the club’s annual Magical Voices performance.
The free performance features about 100 local school students, musical talent from Portland, a visit from Santa Claus, refreshments and a chance for the audience to join in singing Christmas carols.
Rotarians Barbara Turner and Jeff Wester have been working to organize the performance. Turner said 10 years ago, the Sisters Rotary Club noticed that the only holiday music was found in local churches. So club members decided to provide a holiday program that every family in the community could attend.
Sunday evening’s program includes the Sisters Elementary School Choir and both the middle and high school Jazz Choirs. An opera singer from Portland State University School of Fine Arts is performing again in Magical Voices.
“He’s fantastic — he does not need a microphone!” said Turner.
Turner has been involved in organizing Magical Voices from the beginning.
She seeks sponsorships from local businesses so that all of the proceeds can be given to the music programs at Sisters three public schools.
She expects Rotary will raise about $3,000 to support music in the schools.
“The local businesses really do support this,” said Turner.
“Another goal is to give the community a chance to sing Christmas carols,” said Turner.
Turner expects at least 250 people to attend the performance and join the singing.
“Come and enjoy the music!” she added.
Magical Voices is this Sunday at 6 p.m. in the Sisters High School Auditorium. Admission is free
