House is consumed by fire

A home at 530 N. Cowboy in Sisters burned to the ground in the early hours of Wednesday, November 30.

The fire was reported at 1:45 a.m.

Homeowners Scott Redfield, 83, and Juliette Angel, 74, escaped the blaze. The fire caused an estimated loss of over $250,000, according to Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire Marshal Dave Wheeler. The house owned by Redfield was a total loss. He also lost family photos, clothing, auto racing trophies and an extensive auto racing magazine collection.

The cause is under investigation.

“The insurance company is still evaluating the total loss,” said Randy Redfield, Scott Redfield’s son.

Both Scott Redfield and Juliette Angel were in the house when the fire started and escaped by crawling out. They escaped with nothing but the clothes they were wearing and stood in the snow for 15 to 30 minutes, Wheeler said. Both were treated for hypothermia and other injuries at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend and both were released by the end of the week.

Redfield’s yellow Lab, Ace, died in the fire, but Angel’s dog, Hoppy, survived. A cat was still missing by the weekend, Randy Redfield said. Three cars parked in a nearby carport were not damaged.

“The Red Cross has provided clothing and motel vouchers,” Randy Redfield said. “We have also had phone calls from neighbors and friends offering their help.”

No definite future plans have been made, Randy stated, although he added that his father is considering rebuilding along with other options.

According to Wheeler, firefighters never had much chance to quell the blaze.

“It went to the ground,” he said. “We had a burn time of 30 to 40 minutes before we were even notified of the fire.”

The escaped homeowners had no way to contact 9-1-1 and the house is relatively isolated. The blaze was called in by a neighbor half a mile away, Wheeler said.
