News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Katie Hughes scored 23 points and had six steals to lead the Outlaws to a 64-59 victory at Creswell on Tuesday, December 6.
The Outlaws used a full court press throughout game to try to keep the pressure up. According to Coach Bill Blevins, Creswell did a nice job of being patient in their attempt to break the Outlaws’ press.
Blevins said, “We were trailing 19-14 at the end of the first quarter but I thought if we continued to keep the pace we’d get a break.”
The break came for the Outlaws late in the second quarter when Hughes hit three three’s, which put Sisters ahead for good.
With approximately five minutes to go in the game the Outlaws held a 16-point lead but then were slapped with a barrage of fouls. The Lady Bulldogs went to the line 14 times in the fourth quarter alone.
The Outlaws held on by a slim lead to win the game by five points.
Hughes said, “We did a good job tonight but I think we could have won by a lot more if we wouldn’t have given up so many lay-ups. I think we’ve got a good team and we’ll make it to State this year. We work great together as a team and know each other so well we can almost read each other’s thoughts.”
Jenny Boswell finished the night with 15 points, three assists and three rebounds. Emily VanBlaricum contributed nine points and four steals and Cindy Harp added six points and four rebounds. Elyss Clasen rounded out the stats with four steals and five assists.
The Outlaws shot 42 percent from the field and Creswell shot 57 percent.
“We had spurts when everything came together,” said Blevins, “but we also had a lot of breakdowns, especially on the defensive end. But, we’ll fix that. We did better than we did in our first game and we will continue to improve.”
