News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Sisters High School wrestlers grappled on Friday and Saturday, December 9-10, at the Culver Invitational Tournament, which is known for being one of the toughest tournaments in the state.
Twenty-two teams attended the event and Coach Tony Cosby thought his young team did well. Almost every wrestler won a match and scored points for the team.
"I was pretty happy," said Cosby, "considering how young our team is but the harsh reality is that we only had one wrestler place."
Freshman Nick Head took sixth place at 130 pounds.
"Nick has only lived in Sisters for two years," said Cosby. "He hails from Myrtle Point and did a lot of wrestling there. He wrestled against some very tough competition today and did very well."
Cosby stated that two other wrestlers did a good job at the tournament.
"Mike Callavan (freshman; 119 pounds) came out for wrestling for the first time this year and so has only been wrestling three weeks. He came very close to a sixth-place finish," Cosby noted.
Cosby was also pleased with sophomore Ryley Gilmore (111 pounds).
"Ryley's really stepping us this year and did very well this weekend," said Cosby.
"We've only been practicing three to four weeks and we have a couple of wrestlers out due to sickness and grades," said Cosby. "Most of my wrestlers are freshmen and sophomores and are getting their first experience at wrestling. This is going to be a building year for us. Statistically, things might not always look too good, but I think it's going to be a good year for us."
