News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Small Farmer’s Journal of Sisters has been named an Utne Independent Press Award winner in the category of Environmental Coverage.
Utne Magazine is a compendium of independent press stories often ignored in mass media.
“Throughout the year, we scan the media horizon for bold journalism and beautiful writing that challenges our preconceptions, or inspires us to action, or simply takes us away from the grind for a page or two. And because Small Farmer’s Journal is consistently challenging and surprising, it’s a pleasure to honor its achievement with an Utne Independent Press Award,” said executive editor David Schimke.
Utne’s editors select nominee publications through their extensive reading process and careful examination, rather than a competition requiring entry forms and fees. In this way, Utne honors the efforts of small, sometimes unnoticed publications that provide innovative, thought-provoking perspectives.
Small Farmer’s Journal, now entering its 30th year of publication, supports the small family farm and the protection of “relic” farming technologies. The Journal offices are located in the Sisters Industrial Park.
The Journal features articles related to farming on small acreage and follows with editorial content aggressively supporting the independent family farm and the values it represents.
Articles cover organic farming and gardening, working with draft horses, mules or oxen and more.
