Wrestlers grapple well, but fall to North Marion Huskies

The Outlaw wrestlers lost 59-24 to the North Marion Huskies on Thursday, January 12.

Individually, four Outlaw wrestlers recorded falls including Kody Johns, Nick Head, Jake Kleint and Nate McFarland. Johns (112 pounds) won by a fall over Brandon Moore in 1:53. Head (130 pounds) won by a fall over Symon Poulson in 5:03. Head led the match 14-2 at the end of the second period.

Volunteer coach Jeff Smith said, “A match ends if a wrestler is ahead by 15 points but more points are scored for the team if a wrestler wins by pinning his opponent. Nick had one more chance to turn over his opponent and pin him and that’s exactly what he did. He (Head) turned him (Poulson) over and kept him on his back until he’d recorded the fall.” Kleint (160 pounds) won by a fall over Boone Randall in 1:36. McFarland (189 pounds) won by a fall over Vincent Roberts in 1:49.

“It was an exciting match to watch,” said Smith. “Nate was ahead by five points and then Roberts scored six points in a row. Nate reversed for two points and pinned him (Roberts) in 1:49.

“We had pretty good effort by our freshmen and sophomore dominated team,” said Smith. “This was our first dual league match on the road and I think the kids competed well.”

The Outlaw wrestlers competed at The Oregon Classic in Redmond on Friday and Saturday, January 13 and 14.

The Classic is a gigantic tournament that is held at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds every year. Seventeen mats are going continually for two days with wrestling at all levels. Seventy-five high school teams come to participate at the event, including the best teams in the state from 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A schools. Fans of the sport can also enjoy college and women’s wrestling.

Volunteer coach Jeff Smith said, “Because the competition was so strong our team of mostly freshman and sopho-mores lost each of our duals.”

The Outlaws still had some good individual efforts.

On Friday, the Outlaws first match was against Rainier. Riley Gilmore (103 pounds) won by forfeit. Kody Johns (112 pounds) dominated over opponent Evan Guiley and won his match 15-0.

“Kody put him (Guiley) on his back four times but couldn’t get the pin,” said Smith.

Sisters took on Sherwood in their second match on Friday.

Smith told The Nugget that the highlight of the Sherwood match was when Logan Chandler (135 pounds) won by a fall over Wilder with one second to go in the first period. Chandler pinned Wilder in just 1:59.

Kody Johns (112 pounds) won by a fall over Kyle Bougeoin in 48 seconds.

“Kody went out, put him (Bougeoin) on his back and pinned him,” said Smith.

Nate McFarland (189 pounds) won by a fall over Reid Flether in 3:13. McFarland pinned Flether halfway through the second period. The score was tied 2-2 when Nate took Flether to his back and recorded the fall.

Nick Head (130 pounds) won 8-2 over Adam Ditter.

On Saturday the Outlaws wrestled Bank High out of Milton-Freewater (McGloughin). Riley Gilmore (103 pounds) won by forfeit. Micheal Calavan (119 pounds), first- year freshman wrestler, dominated his match against Jarrett Propec and won in a final score of 5-1.

“The only point scored against him (Calavan) was a violation for locking hands,” said Smith. “Micheal took him down in the first round and then rode him for the rest of the round. In the second round Micheal started on top and continued to control his opponent. In the third round Micheal started down, escaped and took Propec down with a double leg take down.”

Nick Head (130 pounds) pinned Dalton Sheets in 3:54.

Smith said, “Nick dominated the match and was ahead 12-2 when he earned the fall late in the second round.”

Nate McFarland (189 pounds) won his match by default when opponent Jake Hase injured his shoulder early in the match.
