Sisters area trailadvocates revise plans

Advocates for connecting Sisters with a network of trails are making some changes to their Sisters Community Trails Plan, adopted in 2003.

“The trails plan objectives and basic plan are still valid,” said committee chair Jeff Sims. “However, experience over the past two years has resulted in some tentative recommendations for minor changes from the committee.”

A high priority has been placed on creating a Peterson Ridge Trail loop, providing a more attractive trail experience for local biking events. Committee members agreed that this addition also would be an economic benefit to the community. Because new trail construction would be required through National Forest land, the proposed route will need an environmental assessment by the Forest Service.

Another proposed addition discussed was a bridge across Whychus Creek, allowing again for a loop trail system for bikers and hikers. Because the creek is a wild and scenic river, this project might be delayed until a plan has been adopted for the creek.

Several other minor adjustments to the trails plan also were discussed at a February 3 meeting, as well as the need for the trails system to connect effectively with the City of Sisters transportation system.

In other business, the committee agreed that renewed efforts should be made to involve equestrian groups and individuals in developing the trails system.

The committee made plans for a half-day retreat to complete a review of the trails plan. Members will meet on Saturday, March 11 from 9 a.m. to noon at a location to be announced. Interested individuals are invited to join the committee at the retreat.

Tentative plans also were made for a public meeting in May to report on progress made to date, recommended adjustments to the plan, and perhaps a proposed adopt-a-trail program.

The Sisters Trails Committee was organized in late 2001 to develop a community trails system connecting the City of Sisters with schools, residential areas and local scenic areas.
