• A family requested the sheriff’s office’s help in locating a missing man. Raul Serrano Cervantes traveled from Coos County to Bend for work last Saturday but never turned up at the job, nor has he contacted his wife. The family is asking that anyone with information call 549-2302 or 541-404-1096; 541-297-1039; 541-888-5962, ext. 371.
• The fire department responded to an alarm at a residence. The firefighters found no sign of a fire, but there were signs of someone having been in the house. Deputies investigated and determined that it was likely a contractor who had been working on the place and set the alram off accidentally upon leaving.
• A business owner found a syringe on a sidewalk. A deputy secured and disposed of it.
• There were numerous slide-offs and single-vehicle wrecks due to icy conditions. Four-wheel drive trucks (or their drivers) seem to be especially prone to this type of mishap.
• A child showed up at a local business unattended — but with $20 to buy candy. Apparently, this is not the first time the youngster has wandered off from home. Mom is frustrated and the youngster apparently thinks it’s funny.
Black Butte Ranch
• Numerous trees fell on Highway 20 near the Ranch due to high winds. All were cleared from the roadway.
• A group of girls basketball players had trouble negotiating the gate at the Ranch. A gate arm hit one of their cars.
An officer explained proper usage of gate entry cards.
• An officer helped free a vehicle stuck in snow on a Ranch road.
