News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Letters to the Editor 02/15/2006

To the Editor:

I would like to congratulate the whole wrestling team and coaches and Kody Johns who is heading for state championships after placing second at the district meet in Stayton last Friday-Saturday.

We all here in Sisters are rooting for Kody.

Most of the kids on the wrestling team are new JVs except for a few but had to do double-duty and wrestle up (to) varsity against opponents who had many more years of experience and some who were placed at district and state ranking and these young wrestlers won some of these matches. They never backed down at all! Several of the wrestlers never mentioned in the paper placed at JV Districts: Thomas Schantz third, Cruz Bryan, second and a couple more placed also.

I would like to see more of the community come out and cheer the wrestling team on. I know it’s not football or basketball which draws thousands of people out, but these kids work just as hard for so little recognition.

Next year many will only get better with experience and good coaching from Tony Cosby and Jeff Smith and Tom Harris, (who) have dedicated a lot of time and are proud of these kids in a rough year competing.

Well done!

To the Editor:

Just a quick response to the article (The Nugget, February 8, page 6) “Organization backs away from school SDC measure.”

I agree 100 percent with the Bend-La Pine superintendent Doug Nelson that the initiative should not have been pulled and that it would have passed easily.

The major error being made that has not been expressed is that if the bond measures fail then we’re left with nothing! It’s idiotic.

Also, people are confused. Bond measures and school SDCs are unrelated issues. School SDCs transfer the burden onto making growth pay for itself. Wake up out there!
