Girls fourth, boys fifth at Nordic meet

In their most successful campaign in school history, the Sisters girls and boys Nordic ski teams placed fourth and fifth respectively at the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association State Championships held February 24-25 at Mt. Hood Meadows.

Jena Rickards came prepared for battle and had the best two days of racing in her career to finish fifth overall in the cumulative standings. She finished seventh in Friday’s 4.6 kilometer classic race and moved up to an outstanding fourth place in Saturday’s 5.3 kilometer freestyle contest. Her cumulative time over the two days was 39 minutes 50 seconds.

Rickards had solid support from teammates Audrey Tehan (42:14) who finished eleventh and Molly Blust (42:31) who ended up 13th.

Maren Burck (46:57) and Erin Kanzig (47:00) finished fourth and fifth for the varsity team.

Kelly Crowther paced the boys team with an 18th place finish overall in 35:18. Crowther was 23rd after day one, but moved up to 16th in the freestyle race Saturday.

Jacob Evan (36:47) and Kyle Rickards (38:41) finished 28th and 32nd overall to score for the Outlaws, with Jeremy Evan (38:42) and Stefan Redfield (39:00) close behind.

“It was an extremely pleasant adventure to coach these kids,” said head coach Lee Fischer. “They lived up to all of my expectations.”

On the girls’ side Bend High squeaked out a five-point victory with 41 team points to 46 points for Redmond, which had been favored going into the meet. Mountain View was third with 68 points and Sisters fourth with 94 among the eleven teams that scored in the meet.

As expected, Redmond dominated the boys’ competition, outdistancing Mt. View 28 to 46. South Eugene scored 80, Bend 85 and Sisters 155 to round out the top five.

Fischer acknowledged the coaching help and financial support he received this season as helping the program turn things up a notch.

Ted Ford and Tom Blust were instrumental in helping teach the kids better technique, according to Fischer.

Financial support came from Cheerleaders Sports Grill, Hoyt’s Hardware , Black Butte Ranch and the Thomas and Gould family businesses. Hoodoo “bent over backwards” to support the team’s training and meet schedules.

The tentative date for the team’s awards banquet is Thursday, March 9.
