Little League tryouts draw record turnout

More than 200 Sisters area youngsters are signed up and ready to play baseball this spring.

“A few more late additions will trickle in this week and we should have about 205 players,” said Chris Houck, Sisters Little League board member. “This looks like our biggest year ever.”

Sisters Little League has been in operation for 20 years.

More than 50 players tried out for Minor and Major league teams on Saturday, March 4, at the Sisters Middle School football field. Each had to demonstrate throwing and catching, fielding grounders, fly balls and hitting.

Parent and volunteer coaches “scored” each young person for a draft, which takes place the following day.

“Our policy is to mix and match players so the teams are reasonably well matched” stated Brian Witt, League President.

Witt forecasts one Major A team of 13 players (aged 10 to 12) that will play teams from other Little League organizations in the area. There will be four Minor A teams (aged 8 to 10). Coaches pitch to the three or four Minor B teams (ages 7 to 9) and there will be several T-Ball teams.

Team rosters will be announced in mid-March. Practice begins the first of April with opening ceremonies and games scheduled for April 22.
