Sisters Library relies on volunteers

With the move to the new facility, the number of items checked out and returned to the Sisters Library has substantially increased, according to librarian Peg Bermel.

The number of items requested from other branches, and by locals using computers outside the building, has also increased. Increased demand for, and return of, library materials translates into lots more items that need to be pulled from, and returned to, the shelves.

Library volunteers play a pivotal role in putting away returned materials, organizing the collection, retrieving requested items from the shelves and performing many clerical tasks.

Other tasks include: photocopying, cleaning item covers, mending books, cutting scrap paper, sharpening pencils, helping to prepare crafts for children’s storytime programs and preparing donated paperback books for the honor-system collection.

The library is currently looking for more volunteers to take up the increased workload.

Once volunteer applicants pass a background check, they are scheduled for a one-hour interview and orientation to the building. Training consists of four two-hour training sessions on how to shelve materials. Volunteers help in selecting a shift that works with their personal schedule.

“There are also benefits to being a volunteer,” said library worker Charlotte Nitcher. “When I recently asked our volunteers what it was they enjoyed about volunteering at the Sisters Library, some very nice responses came back. One volunteer commented about the sense of satisfaction for a job well done and leaving materials orderly and ready for the next patron’s enjoyment.”

The new Sisters Library building is located at 110 N. Cedar St.
