Softball team gets one victory out of three

The Lady Outlaw softball team racked up 11 hits in a 5-3 victory at home over North Marion last week.

They were led by Sam Stoneback, who pitched the entire game. Stoneback struck out eight batters and went 3-3 at the plate with two RBI.

After two innings the score was tied 1-1. Sisters broke the game open in the bottom of the third. Camille Pederson got on base with a walk and Courtney Overstreet and Stoneback followed with singles. With the bases loaded Cindy Harp hit a double to knock in two runners and give the Outlaws a 3-1 advantage. Jessi Heath also hit an RBI single, Harp stole home and the Outlaws took a 4-1 lead.

Sisters’ final run came in the bottom of the sixth. Becky Bremer smashed a triple straight away to right field and Pederson singled to bring her home.

Defensively, Katie Hughes was the star of the day with a great catch in center field. With a towering fly ball headed her way Hughes sprinted back and with an outstretched arm made the catch.

“It was as athletic a play as you’ll ever see,” said Coach Doug McDonald.

Two days later the Outlaws lost 4-2 at home to Cascade, last year’s runner-up at State.

Cascade scored three runs in the top of the first to take a quick 3-0 lead.

The Outlaws came back with two runs in the third to close the Cougar lead to 3-2. Jessi Heath singled in the inning and Becky Bremer hit a double to score Heath. Courtney Metcalf hit the ball down the third base line. Cascade’s third baseman made an error and Bremer scored.

Cascade finished their scoring with another run in the top of the fifth and won the game 4-2.

Sam Stoneback pitched the full game for the Outlaws and gave up only four hits.

“After the first inning we settled down and it was a well played softball game on both sides,” said McDonald.

On Friday, April 7, Sisters traveled to Sweet Home to make up a game that was canceled due to rain the previous week. The Outlaws lost the game 8-0.

Sisters was limited to three hits total, singles from Bremer, Stoneback and Harp.

Sweet Home’s pitcher, Mackenzie Marchbanks, had 13 strikeouts.

“We made some errors in the field and our energy and focus wasn’t what it was on Thursday,” said McDonald.

The Outlaws will host Sweet Home on Thursday, April 13.
