Girls golf team takes third in matches

The girls varsity golf team placed third in their first Capital Conference match, which was held Thursday, April 6, at the Arrowhead Golf Course in Molalla.

Molalla was the tournament leader at 419. Blanchet placed second (458), Sisters third (481), Kennedy fourth (536), Sweet Home fifth (549), Stayton sixth (563) and Cascade seventh (690).

Alexis Wainwright led the Outlaws in individual scoring with 110. Maureen Broadbent carded a 118, Carolyn Bird shot a 122 and Meghan Crowder and Mac Gould both shot 131. Jessica Little carded a 134 and Claire Mutchler rounded out the scoring at 143.

Coach Mary Flande said, “I was really pleased with the girls’ effort. All the kids performed much better on the back nine. I think many of the kids had a little first varsity tournament jitters. Alexis is really the only player with much varsity experience. Maureen (Broadbent) had one bad hole on the front but really played pretty consistent on the back. We did have a little trouble on the greens. They were quick and the pin placements were difficult as well. We’re going to continue to work hard and improve on the short game and hopefully this will show on our next match.”

The hard work paid off for the Lady Outlaws in their match the following week at Mallard Creek in Sweet Home on Tuesday, April 11. The team placed third in the tournament and lowered their score from the previous week by 25 strokes.

Molalla finished first (406), Blanchet took second (418) and Sisters was third with a score of 433. Remaining scores were:

Sweet Home (475), Kennedy (486), Stayton (518) and Cascade (556).

Alexis Wainwright again led the individual scoring for the Outlaws with a score of 100. Jessica Little carded a 102, Meghan Crowder a 106 and Carolyn Bird finished at 125. Mac Gould did not finish the match.

Little and Crowder both had personal bests and Wainwright shot 10 strokes better than last week.

“I’m really pleased with the improvement from the last tournament,” said Flande. “The kids have been working hard in practice and I really think the lower scores for them showed at Mallard.”
