Golfers take tourney title

The boys golf team took first place honors at the tournament held at Aspen Lakes on Tuesday, April 11.

The Outlaws finished at 334 which was the team’s best score of the year. Cascade was the runner-up at 353. Sweet Home placed third (366) and North Marion was fourth (381).

Scott Barton had six birdies for the day and shot a 70, two under par, to win the tourney.

Other individual scores for Sisters were: Miles Johnston (86), Billy Jacobson (87), Evan Mitchell (91) and Kyler Miller (96). Johnston’s and Jacobson’s scores were both season bests.

On Thursday and Friday, April 13 and 14, the Outlaws participated in the two-day Sandpines Tournament. On Thursday, teams played at the Sandpines Course in Bend and Friday at the par-71 Salishan Course in LincolnCity.

Phoenix won the tournament with a two-day total of 647. Seaside was runner up at 660 and Siuslaw took third at 665. Remaining scores were: Gladstone (682), Taft (683), Sisters (693), Stayton (735), Estacada (739) and North Bend (806).

Three of the top 4A teams from last year’s state tournament were represented, including Taft, Phoenix and Siuslaw, last year’s state champs.

Jesse Schutte, two-time defending 3A state champion, of Siuslaw took individual tournament honors with a two-day score of 71/74 (145).

Scott Barton of Sisters was tied with Schutte going into the 18th hole, but Schutte chipped it in for the win.

Barton finished the tournament with scores of 74/72 (146). Evan Mitchell scored 87/92 (179) and Billy Jacobson carded scores of 96/89 (185) and Miles Johnston 90/95 (185). Kyler Miller rounded out the scoring at 94/106 (200).

Coach Jeff Barton said, “We competed very well. The second day at Salishan we were only three strokes back from the previous day and Salishan is a very difficult course. (Two-day team scores were: 345/348) We’re getting better.

“We beat Stayton and they’ll be our biggest rival at the District match. We hammered them pretty good.”
