Girls’ golf squad is solid in third place at Santiam

The Lady Outlaws golf team placed third in the Capital Conference match held at the Santiam Golf Course in Stayton on Thursday, April 20.

Molalla took first with a team score of 429. Blanchet was runner-up at 444 and Sisters took third at 454. Other scores for the day were: Stayton (506), Cascade (599), Sweet Home (478) and Kennedy (529).

Shelby Ross carded a 97 for the best score of the day for the Outlaws. Alexis Wainwright finished at 107 and Meghan Crowder and Maureen Broadbent both scored a 114. Carolyn Bird shot a 119, Jessica Little 126, Mac Gould 129 and Claire Mutchler rounded out the scoring at 136.

Coach Mary Flande said, “Shelby (Ross) scored a personal best for the season. She kept the ball in the fairway and her short game was pretty consistent as well. Alexis, Meghan and Maureen also played pretty consistent and have been playing pretty solid all season.”

“Some of our players had a little trouble in the trees,” said Flande. “We may have tried to force a shot or two that wasn’t there. I’m sure the kids will learn from this tournament and when it comes to the district tournament, they will play better as a team. They’re continuing to work hard and improve each week. It will be very nice to have the next two tournaments at Aspen Lakes before going back to Santiam for districts.”

Sophomore Alexis Wainwright said, “We’ve improved a lot as a team. Each week we keep getting closer and closer to Blanchet who has been taking second at all the Capital Conference matches. The first time out Blanchet beat us by about 35 strokes and then they beat us by 20 strokes. This time around they only beat us by 10. I think that if we continue to work hard we should be able to catch them and move into second place.”

The Lady Outlaws will play at Aspen Lakes on Thursday, April 27. Tee time is set for noon.
