Girls win, boys second at La Pine meet

The Outlaws girls track team scored in every event to win the La Pine Invitational Saturday, April 21, and the boys did nearly as well, finishing second to Henley.

Jenny Boswell turned in her best times of the year in both hurdles races, winning the 100-meter hurdles in 15.62 and the 300 lows in 46.28. The defending champion in both events, she hasn’t been challenged all year and remains undefeated.

A constant, stiff wind kept most athletes from establishing great marks, according to assistant coach Sally Taylor-Pillar.

“The kids worked hard, but there were very few season bests on the day due to the wind,” she said.

Other top placers included Cammy Jacobson who cleared 9 feet for the first time this season to win the pole vault, and Kaitlin McAlister who reeled in the lead runner in the last 600 meters of the 3,000 to win in 12:50.04.

McKenzie Williams won the 400 in 1:04.17.

Finishing with second place ribbons were Jena Rickards in the 1,500 (5:44.5), Ryanne Conrads in the 800 (2:48.85), Kelsey Neilson in the high jump (4 feet 8 inches) and Lani Ulmer in the pole vault (7 feet 6 inches).

The Outlaws put together 156.5 points to easily out-distance second place Burns (117) and the rest of the nine-team field.

Cory McCaffery’s return to the track ignited the sprinting corps with wins in the 400 meter relay and the 1,600 meter relay. McCaffery blew away the field in the 100 meters in a time of 11.29 and placed third in the high jump at 5 feet 8 inches.

Nick Purvis won the 200 meters (23.24) and Ande Phillips leapt 19 feet 8 inches to win the long jump. Taylor Davenport (115 feet 10 inches) and Jeff Sampson (112 feet 7 inches) went 1-2 in the discus.

Red ribbon winners included Purvis in the triple jump (39 feet 8 inches) who missed first place by just 2 inches, and Stefan Redfield in the 1,500 (4:39.4).

The Henley Hornets buzzed everyone for the team title with 193 points to 139 for Sisters among the nine teams.

The Outlaws get a bit of a break in the schedule with a free weekend due to the annual spring prom, but will return to action with a home league meet on Tuesday, May 2.
