News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
If you have an interest in beautifying the City of Sisters with landscaping projects, the Sisters Garden Club needs your help.
The garden club is looking for an additional three or four area residents willing to make their home landscaping available to guided public tours during the 2006 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Garden Tour, according to tour chairperson Claudia Grooney. The club will hold its ninth annual tour on Thursday, July 6 during the weeklong outdoor quilt event.
“This is the club’s major fund-raising event,” Grooney said. “We raise just over $6,000 a year from the tour and these funds go to support our landscaping work throughout the city.”
The club also is seeking tour hosts who can spend a three-hour period either during the morning or afternoon guiding a tour, she added.
Residents who want to learn more about how they may participate in the 2006 tour should visit Grooney at The Gallimaufry or call her at 549-9841 or 549-4983.
The garden club currently maintains landscaping at “The Log Cabin” site at East Hood and East Cascades Avenues, “The Point” across the street from the cabin, the gazebo in the Village Green City Park and the new Sisters Library.
Last year, the club donated $4,400 to the Rotary Club of Sisters to support the new Veterans Park at the north end of town and may soon be maintaining landscaping there, Grooney said. The club also did much of the landscaping at the former Sisters Library during the club’s early years, she added.
In recent years, the club has donated funds to Sisters Elementary, Middle, and High Schools for greenhouses, Harden projects, books, and tapes. The club has also supported Barclay Memorial Park, Camp Caldera, and the Deschutes Basin Land Trust, Grooney noted.
“We currently have 69 members, down slightly from our all-time high of 77 last year,” Grooney said. “We are always looking for new members. Anyone interested in joining us can contact me to learn about our next meeting.”
The club currently is in its 18th year since it was formed in 1988, she added.
