Library honors its volunteers

It was a good time to be a volunteer during National Volunteer Week, April 24-28, when organizations express their appreciation to those giving time and talent to the cause.

On Thursday, April 27, the Sisters Library volunteers were treated to brunch, entertainment and gifts at a gathering in the library’s community room. Eighteen of the 20-some volunteers enjoyed building breakfast burritos, sipping on Mexican hot chocolate, and finished with fruit and Mexican wedding cakes. They were entertained by an interactive skit, and presented with handmade coffee mugs. The mugs were created by Bend potter Laura Walker.

Volunteer coordinator, Charlotte Nitcher, organized the morning with all the library staff contributing. In her opinion, “Volunteers make the world go round.”

The library had recently put out a call for more volunteers, and the response was very good, Nitcher said.

“Sisters people are so generous (as volunteers). They make us (the library) the special place we are,” she said.

The youngest library volunteer, 12-year-old Alexis Stone, is a student at Sisters Middle School. She started at the library last year.

“I wanted to get more into books because I didn’t really like reading. I wanted to learn how to take better care of books and find some to read,” she said.

In an everybody-wins situation, the library gained the enthusiasm of youth, and Alexis is discovering the joy of losing yourself in a book. Her favorite themes are adventure and horse stories.
