Sisters Little League off to exciting start

Sisters Little League starts its second week of the 2006 season with a record 235 kids having played 41 games, the most participation in the organization’s history.

Last Saturday, under warm, sunny skies, the bright green turf of spring was particularly useful. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every field in Sisters had a baseball game on it.

“My son got a hit today,” proclaimed one minor league ball player’s mom. “Then later, he actually caught a fly ball. I was thrilled.”

The Little League concession stand was hopping too, according to Sisters Little League board member and volunteer, Jenny Jacox.

“We’ve had lots of customers with the nice weather,” she said. “A traveling team didn’t have time to get to a store and had lunch with us. They almost ate every hot dog we have.”

Jacox is one of 12 volunteer board members that organize and run the Sisters Little League. There are 39 volunteer coaches and five umpires.

“We operate lean and provide an awful lot of outdoor sport and activity,” said board member David Banks. “If this season is anything like the future, we are going to be really happy when we get our two new fields finished.”

Banks noted the league recently was awarded a $1,500 grant by Deschutes County.

“It’s economic development money from the state lottery,” he said. “We’re going to use the funds to buy cement to build dugouts and set bleachers.”

Volunteers will be needed to lay out the new field’s fence lines, set posts, pull chain link and build paths, Banks added.
