News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Jeff Minke and Evan Sims, Sisters’ number-one doubles players, took third at the Boys Special District 2 tennis Tournament at Central High School on Monday and Tuesday, May 8-9, to lead the Outlaws to a fourth place finish.
Minke and Sims had wins over Agee and Angel from Stayton, Auyb and Tyler from Marist and Kahler and Cromwell from North Bend. The duo lost to Dobson and Olds from North Bend in three sets to take third place and advance to the State Tournament.
“Jeff and Evan played very well to get to their third place finish,” said Coach Boyd Stuwe. “Jeff served very well and had all the skills but is still pretty weak and slow due to his long stay in the hospital. We’re hoping he’ll recover a lot of that speed and mobility by State.”
Ryley Newport and Shyama Ellis, (No. 2 doubles), advanced to the third round where they lost to Banson and West, the fourth seed team from Central.
“That last match that Riley and Shyama played was their strongest showing of the season. They put out an exceptional effort against a very strong team,” said Stuwe.
Dylan Stuwe and Sam Fullhart played at the No. 3 doubles position. Stuwe’s regular partner, Eric McKinley, was unable to play and so Fullhart, who normally plays No. 4 doubles, moved up to the No. 3 position with Stuwe. The duo picked up one win in the consolation bracket against a strong team from Molalla and was defeated in the second round.
“Dylan played the match of his life,” said Stuwe. “His court coverage, shot making and serving was his best of the season. He hit four ace serves in one set and that was in the first match that they lost.”
Erik Sellgren and Jake Thomas (No. 4 doubles) were eliminated in the first round by McGuinness and Holloway from Hidden Valley.
Jordan Wellman (No. 1 singles) won three out of four matches before losing to the No. 3 seeded player, Hudson from Marist, in the quarterfinals.
“Jordan just played great,” said Stuwe. “His game has come so far in the course of the season. He moved from No. 3 singles to a strong No.1 in our league.”
Jared Whent (No. 2 singles) won two out of three matches and lost in his third match against Rear from Marist.
Charlie Phillips (No. 3 singles) won his first match and lost his second against Gratreak from Central.
Will Newport (No. 4 singles) won his first match and lost his second match to Gukenberg, a tough competitor and the No. 4 seed from Marist, who made it to the semifinals.
Evans and Sims will compete at the State finals on Friday and Saturday, May 19-20 at the Eugene Swim and tennis Club.
