Garden fair draws lots of green thumbs

Perfect spring weather provided plenty of inspiration for hundreds of local gardeners to come out to Sisters Elementary School for the annual garden fair.

The fair offered them the opportunity to buy a wide range of plants to start their spring work: perennials, annuals, vegetables, herbs. There were also informational booths and lots of crafts and activities for the youngest green thumbs.

The most popular items, the hanging baskets put together by the 128 Sisters Elementary School Garden Club members, went quickly.

Within a half hour of the 10 a.m. launch of the fair, they were almost sold out, partly because teachers made a run on them after they were stored in classrooms.

Shannon Pollard, Garden Club advisor, said the club will be able to produce more baskets for the next fair.

“We have a bigger greenhouse and next year we’ll be able to accommodate more baskets,” she said.

Central Oregon Pole Structures put up a new 24-by-36-foot greenhouse building, which will get new siding and be open for next year (see “Garden Club gets new greenhouse,” The Nugget, May 10, page 11).
