Softball team wins at home in extra innings

Fans enjoyed a barnburner finish when the Sisters girls softball team defeated North Marion 9-8 at home on Tuesday, May 9, in extra innings.

Sisters took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning highlighted by an RBI double from Camille Pedersen.

North Marion came back with three runs in the third to tie the game 3-3. From there it was a close back-and-forth game, with the lead often changing.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Outlaws found themselves down 6-5. The crowd went crazy when Pedersen and Courtney Metcalf hit back-to-back triples. The inning ended in a deadlock and the game went into extra innings.

North Marion came out strong in the top of the eighth and scored two runs to regain the lead at 8-6.

In the bottom of the eighth Sam Stoneback drew a walk. Pedersen hit a single and then both players advanced on passed balls. Cindy Harp followed with a hit that knocked both players in to tie the game. Metcalf drove Harp in for the winning run.

“It was a wild game,” said Coach Doug McDonald. “We came back four times and showed a lot of heart. With the win today we set a record for wins in a season with six. Most people wouldn’t consider six wins a lot, but considering where we’ve come from it’s a big deal.”

Two days later Sisters lost 13-6 to Cascade, one of the top 10 teams in the state.

Two doubles by Pedersen and three singles from Becky Bremer highlighted the Outlaws offense.

“They scored five in the last inning so it was actually a tighter game than the score indicates on paper,” said McDonald.
