Sisters Community Choir belts it out

If you didn’t get to the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration out on the Old Brooks Camp Road over the last weekend, you missed some mighty fine singing talent by members of the Sisters Community Choir.

The choir is made up of 17 singers who made beautiful music under the guiding hands of Director George Larson and Accompanist Jane Moore. The pews of the church were filled with all ages of Sisters residents who enjoyed the Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon performances.

The first part of the performances was led off with a harmonious piece written by Thomas Ford (1580 – 1648), “Since First I Saw Your Face,” followed by another enchanting number written by L.J. White with lyrics by Lord Tennyson, “There is Sweet Music Here.”

“Three Contemporary Madrigals” by Eugene Butler followed Lord Tennyson’s delightful description of the choir’s musical talents, “There is sweet music here that softer falls…”

Ensembles and soloists carried the audience to the intermission. Jean Eisele, accompanied by Jane Moore, thrilled eveyone with Burton Lane’s “Look to the Rainbow,” followed by a trio made up of Gwen Philipsen, Miriam Anderson, and Peggy Tehan. The three women gave us “On The Willows There” from Godspell. Peggy and Gwen finished with another Godspell piece, “All for the Best.”

Then a delightful group of five male singers who called themselves The Forefathers and accompanied by Adele McCready made the choir performances even more enjoyable with their barbershop-style singing. Just before intermission, Peggy Tehan took up her guitar to sing “Moon River.”

After intermission, Director George Larson presented a dialog on selections from Broadway musicals that that the choir would sing to round out the splendid performances, among them selections from “Porgy and Bess,” Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story,” Lerner and Loewe’s “Camelot” and “Carousel” by Rogers and Hammerstein II.

To end the evening, the Sisters Community Choir thrilled everyone all with their inspiring performance of the audience’s favorite message of hope for music-lovers nationwide, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
