Camp Sherman celebrates holiday

Camp Sherman hosted a fun filled holiday weekend — starting Thursday evening with a potluck dinner and National History Day participants from Black Butte School performing at Camp Sherman Community Hall.

Five local students will be headed east next month for National History Day events in Maryland (see related story, page 24). The crowd of parents, grandparents and friends witnessed student presentations after dinner.

Rachel Lovegren and her sister Danielle performed old slave songs as their history day project at the evening performance.

“The Lovegren girls were just wonderful,” said Heidi Fernandez. “Their singing voices are outstanding.”

Events for National History Day are held at College Park, Maryland, on the University of Maryland campus June 11-15. The awards ceremony will be webcast on June 15, 5:30 and 8:30 a.m. Pacific time at http://www.NationalHistoryDay.org.

Saturday morning saw the Hall once again in use for the annual Friends of the Metolius meeting (see page 5). This event usually starts the Camp Sherman summer season as winter snowbirds return and greet full-time residents. It also brings everybody up to speed on local events.

The unseasonably cool weather did not deter folks from enjoying Saturday night’s barbecue and entertainment at the Camp Sherman Store.

Finally, on Sunday morning, festivities ended with a hearty pancake breakfast at the Community Hall. Parents and students from Black Butte School prepared and served the meal for hundreds of local folks, visitors and campers. Proceeds help support the five students going to National History Day.
