Sisters All-Stars shine in district tournament

The regional end-of-season Little League softball and baseball tournament ended last week with a strong showing from Sisters-area players.

Sisters sent five All-Star teams to the Oregon District 5 Tournament held in Redmond, July 1-6. Some 52 teams entered from Central and Eastern Oregon. Division winners go on to play in state competition later this month.

The Sisters Little League Junior Girls 13- and 14-year-old softball All-Stars received the sportsmanship trophy in their division. It was immediately and proudly placed on display at Ray’s Food Place market. Dawn Cooper and Tim Hernandez coached the team.

Sisters 10- and 11-year-old All-Stars also won the sportsmanship award for their division.

“These boys lost both games, had some tough calls, but kept a good attitude,” said Sisters Little League President Chris Houck.

“In their first game they made a third out to win the game. They ran off the field, but were called back when an umpire changed his call. They lost after that, but those kids never whined or complained, they just went back out on the field and played the best ball they could.”

The team was coached by Mike Blumm, John Tehan and Don Miller.

The nine- and 10-year-old All-Star team took third place in the Minors division. They were coached by Brian Witt, Don Pollard and Jason Calarco. (See story page 6.)

In the Junior Division, the Sisters All-Stars lost to Jefferson County 8-0 to take second place in their divison. Ian Ferguson and Tom Elliott coached the 13- and 14-year-old boys team.

In summing up the play of 2006 Sisters All-Star teams Houck commented, “I could not be prouder of these boys and girls. They really played great ball with great attitudes and had a lot of fun.”
