News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Sisters area equestrian enthusiasts will have a rare opportunity to see the magnificent Friesian horse in action at the Friesians Spectacular Friesian Horse Performance and Open Barn hosted by Willows Ranch in Sisters.
The event is scheduled for Wednesday, August 2, at 7 p.m. at Willows Ranch, 70190 Indian Ford Rd.
"We have invited community members to similar events three or four times over the past 15 years," said Willows Ranch owner Judi Knapp. "Our last performance and open barn was four years ago and we decided it was time for another community event."
The event offers a relatively rare local opportunity to watch the massive black steeds perform.
"In order to acquaint the public with the Friesian horse breed we perform entertainment at large equestrian venues across the U.S.," Knapp said. "We don't often perform in Central Oregon, so the performance at our ranch is an opportunity for the local people to meet the Friesian horses and to see what we do."
The Friesian horse originated in the Netherlands and due to its size, strength and agility was a prized war horse in the Middle Ages. The introduction of Spanish Andalusian blood in the 16th and 17th Centuries gave the breed higher knee action, a relatively small head and its distinctive arching neck.
The result is a powerful breed of exceptional elegance and beauty - spectacular to watch in performance.
The outdoor performance is free to the public. No dogs are allowed and it is recommended to allow 15 minutes to park and walk to the arena.
