News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
"Kora," a large, fluid abstract in oil by Joellyn Loehr of Sisters took first place in Expressions West 2006, Coos Art Museum's annual competition for painters in 13 western states.
Ed Musante, a San Francisco based artist, served as curator and juror for the competition.
"What I looked for in reviewing the 542 submissions were works that were well conceived, well designed, but most important, ones that communicated with the viewer," he said. "I believe the 72 works I selected were the best of the submissions. My selection of 'Kora' was based on how it connected with me. From clear across the gallery it communicated sheer joy! This is a work of art created by someone who takes great pleasure in pushing paint around a canvas and knows how to convey that feeling. Loehr does so with a visual sophistication that allows her to express what it is that she is feeling."
Loehr explains that "kora" is a Tibetan word for pilgrimage, usually around a sacred mountain. The painting was inspired by walks to wildflower meadows.
"Kora" becomes a part of the permanent collection of the Southwestern Oregon Community College Foundation. Another painting, "East of Here," was acquired by Coos Art Museum.
Loehr shows her work at the Sisters Country Faire and Art Show (August 11-12), and the Black Butte Ranch homeowners' show (September 1-2).
