Motorcyclist killed in Highway 20 wreck

A North Plains-area man died Monday afternoon when he lost control of his motorcycle on Highway 20 about 25 miles west of Sisters. The victim was ejected off his motorcycle and struck by a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.

Efforts to revive the victim by an Oregon State Police trooper and a cardiologist traveling in the area were unsuccessful.

According to state police, on September 4, at about 12:30 p.m., a 2002 Suzuki motorcycle operated by Kouman Ly, age 29, from North Plains, was negotiating a right hand curve on Highway 20 near milepost 75.5 when it lost control causing Ly to be ejected into the westbound lane.

Ly was struck by a westbound 1990 Toyota Camry driven by James Nylander, age 58, from Beaverton.

A cardiologist traveling through the area and OSP Senior Trooper Alan Santiago performed CPR on Ly for approximately 25 minutes before he was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was wearing protective headgear.

Nylander and his right front passenger, Donna Nylander, age 58, also from Beaverton, were not injured in the crash.

Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District personnel responded to the crash. Members of the Oregon State Police Bend Area Command Office, with assistance from the Linn County Sheriff's Office, investigated the crash. The cause is still under investigation.

ODOT assisted with the heavy holiday traffic and Highway 20 was closed for approximately 20 minutes.
