Outlaws roll over Sweet Home on gridiron

Cory McCaffrey scored four touchdowns to lead Sisters to a 35-7 victory over the Sweet Home Huskies on Friday, September 1. The Outlaws started fast and never looked back.

After the kickoff and a 12-yard reception by Nate Jackson from Jarred Haskamp, McCaffrey followed the blocking of Tyson Edmunson and Evan Eady 63 yards for a touchdown on the second play to give Sisters an early 6-0 lead.

The Outlaws defense got the ball back quickly and McCaffrey followed the blocking of Nick Pepperling and Arne Pierce 44 yards for another TD. Sampson scored on a two-point conversion to give Sisters a 14-0 advantage.

Sweet Home scored their lone goal of the night in the second quarter to narrow Sisters' lead to 14-7. Coach Bob Macauley told The Nugget that from that point on the Outlaws defense became very stingy.

Led by the fierce linebacker play of Jeff Sampson, Dominique Nieri and Taylor Davenport, the Outlaws shut the Huskies down.

The Outlaws came out in the third quarter and stifled the Huskies' running game. Todd Bell, Sam Simone and Trevor Summers led the attack that forced the Huskies to punt after three plays. Sisters' offense poured on the offense as Haskamp capped a 47-yard drive with an eight-yard score behind Jake Kleint. Josh Marr added the extra point and extended their lead to 21-7.

The Outlaws defense held the Huskies to three plays to force the punt. McCaffrey then scored his third TD of the night on a 16-yard run behind a crushing block by Nate Jackson. Marr again added the extra point and Sisters went up 28-7.

Outlaws defense continued to dominate the game and the offense added a final touchdown with 9:28 left in the fourth quarter on a McCaffrey eight-yard run.

The Outlaws offense rolled up 369 yards rushing and 100 yards passing for a total of 469 yards of total offense. McCaffrey had 18 carries for 242 yards and four touchdowns. Haskamp went nine for 17 passing for 100 yards and also had four carries for 27 yards and a TD. Sampson had nine receptions for 60 yards. Jackson had four receptions for 60 yards and Gryder had four receptions for 41 yards. Gryder also had four carries for 27 yards.

The Outlaws defense held Sweet Home to only 35 yards rushing in 29 attempts. The Huskies added another 139 yards in the air, but they were never able to mount a serious threat to the Outlaws.

Davenport led the defense and recorded four quarterback sacks to break the school record. He also recorded 12 tackles. Sampson had nine tackles, and Gryder had eight tackles and one fumble recovery in his first outing as an Outlaw.

Coach Bob Macauley said, "I was very pleased with the execution and intensity of the kids. The offense never had to punt and we were always the attacker on defense."

Macauley told The Nugget he was especially pleased with the play of Nate Jackson and Carroll Gryder and said they contributed in many ways that don't show in the statistics. Macauley was also proud of Josh Marr and stated that the kicker is going to be a big weapon for the Outlaws as they progress through the season.

The Outlaws return to play Friday night, September 8.
