Outlaws maul Elmira in 75-20 football rout on the road

The Outlaws contest against Elmira on Friday, October 20 wasn't much of a contest at all.

Though the Outlaws did not attempt to pile on the points, the game ended in a 75-20 win for Sisters.

Elmira came up with a new offense to use in their match-up with the Outlaws. They threw away their running game and decided to go with a spread offense, and according to Coach Bob Macauley, created a lot of problems for the Outlaws defense in the first half.

The Outlaws offense had no problems.

Sisters opened the game in high fashion when Jarred Hasskamp completed a 53-yard pass to Nate Jackson for the touchdown, and from there the scoring spree was on.

The Outlaws scored once more in the first quarter on a Cory McCaffrey 30-yard run.

Elmira answered back with a touchdown, and at the end of the first quarter, the Outlaws held a 14-7 lead.

In the second quarter, Elmira and Sisters went back and forth scoring - but the Outlaws were puncing it across the goal line while Elmira mostly had to content themselves with sniping from a distance. The Outlaws scored on a 37-yard run by McCaffrey and a 10-yard run by Jeff Sampson, and Elmira scored on a 23-yard pass play. Sisters scored again on a McCaffrey 32-yard run, and Elmira responded with a 31-yard field goal. Sampson scored on a 15-yard run, and Elmira answered with a 41-yard field goal. At the half Sisters held a 42-20 advantage.

Elmira threw the ball 42 times in the first half and rushed 13 times for a total of 55 plays which is what a team typically gets in a full game. Elmira completed 17 of 42 passes for 229 yards and rushed for 26 yards in the first half.

"Elmira really came out and controlled the ball and had time of possession and scored 20 points," said Macauley.

On the flipside, Sisters only ran 16 plays in the first half and controlled the ball for less than five minutes of the first 24 minutes of the game. However, those 16 plays were very productive and netted 350 yards and 42 points.

"It was a good game the first half," said Macauley. "Elmira was answering every score that we had."

In the second half, the Outlaw varsity players only played for the first four minutes of the third quarter. The Outlaws ran six plays and scored on three of them.

The JV team took over and played well against Elmira's varsity squad.

"The JV players did an outstanding job and were led by Nick Head who has improved by leaps and bounds over the year," said Macauley.

Head rushed nine times for 64 yards and a touchdown.

Nate Emberton also had a great performance with four carries right up the middle for 56 yards and a TD.

"Our JV played outstanding, and our line was the best that our JV have played. The JV line of Tyler Miller, Kevin Wistrom, Thomas Arends on that side just did a tremendous job. We also got some really good play from quarterback Aaron Fegenbush. I was very happy with how they played against Elmira's varsity," said Macauley.

"We had a lot of offense and very good defense but as a coach I don't like the fact that anybody, let alone us, would score 75 points in a game. Elmira's coaching staff and fans afterward were very gracious and understanding that we were not trying to score and realized our JVs were just running base plays," the coach said.

"Again, I don't feel good about a lopsided win of this nature, but I feel good about the way our kids played. Their (Elmira's) coaching staff was thrilled that they competed so well in the first half, and they did. Their quarterback threw on time, their receivers caught the passes, their guys blocked, so we were really in a game that was a shoot-out the first half and then became lopsided in the first four minutes of the third quarter," said Macauley.

On Friday, October 27, the Outlaws will host Cottage Grove (CG) for the league title.

Macauley made note of the upcoming game.

"CG has been averaging 35 points a game. They're very big, very well coached and very fast, and this will be a huge challenge for us."
