Sisters student named to state advisory position

Lane Milroy, a sophomore at Sisters High School, has been selected to serve on State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo's Youth Advisory Team.

This team is a group of students from all over Oregon who meet five or six times a year to discuss issues related to education and give recommendations to the superintendent.

The team's first meeting of the year was held in Salem on October 20 at the Oregon Department of Education.

"I am listening to the students that we serve," Castillo said. "They play an important role in changing and improving public education in Oregon by using their experiences as students to inform me, the State Board of Education, legislators, educators and business and community leaders."

"Students need a voice in the decisions that impact them. Decisions cannot be made about education without the input of students. This Youth Advisory Team has provided me with the opportunity to get to know our youth through mature and intense discussions that continue to teach me as well as remind me why I am in this business," Castillo said.

Milroy is currently a sophomore at Sisters High School.

"I applied to be on the Youth Advisory Team because I've always enjoyed being a part of decisions that are made and love being involved. I hope that I can bring my ideas to the Youth Advisory Team and help to make our schools a better place," he said.
