Sisters students enjoy book club

Sisters Elementary School teacher Leslie Waltz has started a new book club.

The book club started off with a big hoot with Farley Mowat's classic, "Owls in the Family," complimented by another age-old children's classic, "Where the Wild Things Are," by Maurice Sendak and Bill Cosby's "One Dark and Scary Night."

Waltz is assisted by Bill Mitchell, a paraprofessional teacher (who in his other life is a golf pro). Waltz and Mitchell decided to invite parents and children to discuss the books they read with naturalist Jim Anderson, who told owl stories.

As an added element of stimulation, Anderson borrowed "Archimedes," an injured great horned owl undergoing training as an educational bird by Gary Landers, operator of a raptor rehabilitation facility near Sisters. Children, parents, teachers and Archimedes all had a wonderful time as Anderson shared his 50 years of banding owls, hawks and eagles throughout Central Oregon and Southeast Arizona.

Anyone who would like to join the book club is invited. The list of books Waltz and Mitchell are offering for November includes:

• "Molly's Pilgrim," by Barbara Cohen.

• "Baseball Saved Us," by Ken Mochizuki.

• "Owl Moon," by Jane Yolen.

• "Amazing Bats," by Seymour Simon.

• "The Halloweener," by Dave Pilkey.

On Thursday, November 16 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. book club readers and parents are invited to join together at Sisters Elementary School to celebrate and share ideas and favorite parts of the books they have read.
