News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Lauren White, an eighth grader at Camp Sherman's Black Butte School, will represent Oregon at a "Jamestown Live" event in Virginia.
The event is an educational celebration and webcast commemorating the first English settlement in the New World in 1607. White was selected after her success in the National History Day competition earlier this year. White's theme at that event was documenting "Freedom Summer," the 1964 Civil Rights movement in the United States.
She is one of 53 students selected from across the United States for the Jamestown event. Julia Van Der Laan was originally selected to participate but was unable to attend.
White will take part in the "Flags Coming Home" procession, carrying the state flag of Oregon into Jamestown, Virginia.
This special anniversary will mark 400 years since the first settlement. It will be webcast to the nation's schools on Thursday, November 9, so they may be made aware of the historical event.
White will leave Camp Sherman with her father, Roger White, owner of the Camp Sherman Store, on Tuesday, November 7.
PBS correspondent Gwen Ifill will host the webcast which begins at 10 a.m. Pacific time. The one-hour event may be viewed at http://www.jamestownjourney.org.
The event will be viewd by K-12 students across the U.S.
