News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
All Sisters High School graduating seniors who are planning to continue their education after high school are encouraged to apply for the Veterans' Appreciation scholarship. Each year the scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior.
The scholarship was created by Sisters resident and veteran Lynn Johnston "to encourage students to appreciate the contributions and sacrifices that veterans have given our country."
In the spring of 2006, $8,000 was given to a Sisters High School graduating senior, and over the past five years, $22,000 has been given to five graduating seniors.
To qualify the student must: read a non-fiction book of historical or military significance; interview a veteran who was engaged in a major conflict and who has not previously been interviewed for the scholarship; and provide an essay or video taped commentary about how the interview with the veteran has changed the student and what the student has gained from it.
Johnston will donate $5,000 to this year's scholarship fund. He invites all veterans and other community members to also donate to the fund.
Students wishing to apply for the scholarship and anyone wishing to contribute to the scholarship fund should contact the high school's front office or principal Bob Macauley for complete details.
