Old Christmas trees help fund new mission

Your old Christmas tree can help send members of Three Sisters Fellowship on a mission trip. A group of church members is traveling to Mexico in February to help a mission started by a former pastor. They are raising money for the trip by picking up trees after the holiday for a suggested donation of $10.

"If somebody has the desire to go, it is their financial resources. It really gives us an opportunity to fully rely on the Lord," said Kim Barry, one of the organizers.

Barry added that while the church fully supports the mission, it is up to each member to raise the $1,000 needed to travel and live in an impoverished area of Mexico for a few weeks in February. Travelers plan to bring supplies to the poor villagers of the area. The team will include people with both home building and medical skills.

An organizer of the mission said that although Cancun is known as a luxurious vacation destination for American and European travelers, the area is divided in its wealth.

"It's really the haves and the have-nots in that area," said Debbi Stevens. "We will be giving out supplies to the poor people - food, medical, clothing."

Stevens said former pastor Ron Griggs and wife Donna left the church a few years ago to start what Three Sisters Fellowship calls "Team Yucatan."

"They are really trying to build relationships in the community and help any way they can," said Stevens.

Stevens said this first group trip will be the start of establishing a regular communication to support the area.
