Wind storm topples trees

High winds that howled through Sisters on Thursday night, December 14, downed trees and large limbs from Black Butte Ranch to Cloverdale.

The largest tree in Bonnie Williams' yard on Fir Street in Sisters snapped off about seven feet from the ground and toppled onto her bedroom at about 8:30 p.m.

Both she and her husband escaped injury.

"We were decorating our (Christmas) tree, actually," Williams said.

Williams told The Nugget that she heard a strange sound and went into her bedroom to investigate.

"I heard a big noise and stuff started coming off the walls," she said. "I just ran. I was expecting to see a tree coming through the ceiling, but it never did."

The tree landed on the peak of the roof but did not penetrate into the house. Williams speculated that some smaller trees may have slowed the big tree's descent.

Damage was hard to assess. The tree also hit Williams' car, shattering the windshield, but on Friday morning the whole mess was covered with snow, and Williams wasn't sure how much damage the car had sustained.

The falling tree took down a ground wire from a power pole, and the Williams' were advised to stay out of the house until a Central Electric Cooperative technician ascertained that all was safe.

A property owner east of Sisters reported four trees downed. The trees somehow managed to miss a horse trailer and a truck.
