News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Drivers may have noticed new "No Parking" signs at the west end of Sisters. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) recently placed the signs along the stretch of Highway 20 which passes by McDonald's and Best Western Ponderosa Lodge to improve safety.
ODOT spokesman Peter Murphy said the change was made for several reasons. Parked vehicles block the view of ODOT's message sign which gives road conditions on Santiam Pass. Also, when cars or trucks park along that stretch of highway, drivers turning from Barclay Drive don't have a clear view of the intersection.
"It's just a safer environment for all concerned," said Murphy.
ODOT had noticed some semi-trucks parking in the area to chain up before driving up to the pass. Murphy said ODOT prefers chaining to happen in the designated area closer to the pass.
Murphy said temporary signs were put up about one month ago, and they will be replaced soon by permanent signs.
