Born Barbara Ellen Jackson February 6, 1932 in Arvin, California, to John W. Jackson and Mary Della (Knight) Jackson both of Tennessee, Barbara died January 8, 2007 after a long battle with cancer at the age of 74.
Barbara's family moved to Sisters when she was a child where they lived on the Lazy Z ranch for some years. Soon after she graduated from eighth grade at Sisters Elementary School when it was a two-story white building, her family moved back to Caliente, California, where she attended Bakersfield High School.
She married Joe Souza in 1949. In 1950, shortly after the birth of their daughter, Joanne, Joe was killed in an accident. Barbara married Thomas "Tom" Ward in 1951. Barbara and Tom moved back to Sisters in 1967. After 34 years of marriage and four more children, Tom died of cancer in 1985. She and her current husband of 16 years, Morris Woodruff moved to La Pine in 1992, where she lived until her illness forced her to move into Bend.
Barbara loved listening to Morrie play music. She and Morrie also enjoyed sailing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, dancing and their many trips to Hawaii. Her other interests were her flowers and gardening, traveling and camping but mostly spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and families.
She is survived by, whom she loved dearly, each and every one: her husband; her five children; daughters and sons-in-law: Joanne and Dennis Chapman of Badger, California; Connie and Bob Haney of Sisters; Kim Ward of Bend. Sons and daughters-in-law: Tom and Kara Ward of Warrenton; Wes and Pam Ward of Bend. Nineteen grandchildren: Keith, Joe, Phillip, Justin, Amanda, Jim, Bryan, Britny, Justine, Jackie, Kylee, Victoria, Shane, Trisha, Crasondra, Chantyl, Danielle, Bethany and Megan. Twenty five great grandchildren; three sisters Doris Huffstuttler, Emma Mojica and Fay Nolen, all living in California. She also leaves 25 nieces and nephews.
Barbara was proceeded in death by her first husband Joe Souza, second husband, Tom Ward, her mother Mary Della (Knight) Jackson, Camp, Liebol, her father John W. Jackson who drowned in the Kern River when she was five months old, her stepfather who raised her, James Alvin (Riley) Camp. Brothers John Jackson Jr., Arnold Jackson, James Alvin (Junior) Camp Jr., William "Bill" Camp, a sister Ruth (Jackson) Girardo, a nephew Vance Huffstuttler and a niece, Brenda Nolen.
