Lady Outlaws lose by one in overtime

The girls' basketball team lost 54-55 in overtime to the La Pine Hawks at home on Tuesday, January 9.

At the half, Sisters trailed the Lady Hawks by seven at 20-27.

Sisters had a 10-point run in the third quarter, and outscored the Hawks 15-11. Heading into the fourth quarter the Lady Outlaws trailed by nine, 29-38.

Sisters held La Pine to just six points in the fourth quarter. With 53 seconds left on the clock, Cammy Jacobson made a short shot to put the Outlaws up for the first time in the game at 43-42.

La Pine answered back, scored two and took the lead at 44-43 with 27 seconds remaining in the game.

The Outlaws called time out, made a play and at the buzzer Kali Ulmer was fouled on the shot. Ulmer missed her first shot but made the second to tie it up 44-44 and send the game into overtime.

The Lady Hawks made three quick consecutive baskets at the start of overtime to push to a 50-44 lead. With 23 seconds left on the clock the Outlaws were down 48-53. Katie Hughes hit a three-pointer to pull Sisters to within two at 51-53. The Outlaws were forced to foul, the Hawks made both their shots at the line and La Pine went up 55-51.

At the buzzer, Jen Friend buried a three, but unfortunately it wasn't enough and the Outlaws lost by one, 54-55.

Brandi Palmer led the Outlaw offense with 17 points. Kali Ulmer had 13 points and Katie Hughes added 11, including three threes. Jen Friend finished with seven points.

Sisters was only four of 17 from the line and La Pine finished 10-for-21.

Brandi Palmer said, "The fast pace of this game allowed us to take shots that normally wouldn't be there, and working from the inside out really helped to boost our points. If we could do this for all 32 minutes, we would really be able to compete well with other teams."

Coach Kevin Cotner said, "The girls did a good job showing a lot of heart and fight in the second half and through overtime. Anytime you lose by one, it's disappointing, but it was good to see the girls battle back. At one point in the third quarter we were down by 13 and then down by six in overtime, but both times they fought back."

Three days later the Lady Outlaws lost 32-48 at Cottage Grove.

The Outlaws will play host to Marist on Friday, January 19.
