Cascade Horizon Band to perform in Sisters

The Cascade Horizon Band (CHB), a 50-plus member instrumental group, will play its fourth annual Winter Concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11, in the Sisters High School Auditorium.

This free concert repeats a performance two weeks ago before about 800 enthusiastic fans at Bend High School.

Director Sue Steiger has chosen a variety of music for the winter concert, including pieces that showcase different sections of the band. These include the popular "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," featuring the seven-member trumpet section; "Voodoo Interlude," with special percussion intrigue; "Clarinet Hoedown;" and a moving arrangement of "Shenandoah" that features the flute and French horn sections.

The challenging program also includes a medley of John Williams themes; selections from "The Wizard of Oz;" "March to the Scaffold" from the Hector Berlioz "Symphonic Fantastique, Opus 14;" and "Armed Forces - The Pride of America."

Additional marches and popular show pieces round out the 12 numbers on the program.

The Cascade Horizon Band, established in January 2003, is affiliated with the international New Horizons senior band program that began 14 years ago at New York's noted Eastman School of Music. CHB was the 74th band to join the program, which now has more than 100 groups and some 4,000 musicians involved.

Cascade Horizon Band, based in Bend, has made 50 public appearances at a variety of Central Oregon venues. The band played twice last year in Sisters, first in the Sisters Rodeo Parade then in the third annual summer concert at Sisters High School. The band also has produced three CDs containing selections from past concerts.

All CHB concerts are free to the public. The Sisters concert is supported in part by presenting sponsor RE/MAX Town & Country Realty.
