SOAR reaching out to seniors

Sisters Organization for Activities and Recreation (SOAR) will offer a senior fitness program within the next couple of weeks. Specific information will be available at SOAR's Web site http://www.sistersrecreation.com or by calling 549-2091.

SOAR acknowledges that the needs of Sisters' seniors are often not met. At present, Sisters does not have a senior center. SOAR is hoping to begin to bridge this gap. The organization's executive director Carrie Ward told The Nugget that SOAR is highlighting the development of programs especially geared to seniors' needs.

Sisters residents Jan and Mike Morgan recently donated $10,000 to SOAR to not only support the organization's youth programs but also provide funding for the development of senior activities.

"Most seniors in Sisters have both discretionary income and time. Getting more seniors involved will ultimately help their (SOAR's) fund-raising," Morgan said.

Ward is currently looking for volunteers to help develop a senior computer lab program. She remarked that SOAR's computer lab is used little in the mornings. If she can find volunteers to man the lab, Ward wants to open the facility to seniors to learn computer skills, to become efficient in using the Internet and to provide e-mail services. Anyone willing to volunteer who possesses the background and knowledge to man the lab and help seniors learn needed skills should contact Ward at 549-2091.

Ward is also looking for volunteers who are willing to work with Spanish speaking elementary school students after school to help these young people become more familiar using English. Some knowledge of Spanish, although not mandatory, is helpful. Anyone wishing to volunteer should contact Ward directly. Her e-mail is [email protected]
