New high school scholarship established

Last week, during their monthly Wednesday meeting in the Sisters Library Community Room, The Friends of the Sisters Library (FOSL) created a scholarship that honors people who enjoy achieving results. Diane Jacobsen, retired Sisters elementary teacher and FOSL Board Member, announced the formation of the "Peg Bermel/Friends of the Sisters Library Scholarship."

The board, with the help of the scholarship committee, had been working on the scholarship without the knowledge of Sisters Librarian Bermel, who attended the meeting when the scholarship was announced. The scholarship will amount to $1,000 per year for two years after graduation from high school.

Diane Jacobsen, who has worked with Bermel over the years of living and teaching in Sisters, stated, "This scholarship is to honor longtime Sisters Public Librarian, Peg Bermel, whose dedication to the Sisters community, its youth and its library has helped the library grow along with the community.

"Beginning her tenure in a small, one-room library, heated by a wood stove, she shepherded our growth through two major building projects. We of the Friends would like to honor a student who demonstrates this kind of dedication."
