Kiwanis donates to worthy causes

Sisters Kiwanis President JT Taylor presented checks to two worthy causes at a recent Kiwanis Club of Sisters meeting.

Receiving a check for $250 for Relay for Life of the American Cancer Society was Kiwanis member Linda Bafford and her sister Chris Brophy. Linda and Chris are co-captains for the Sisters Caballeros team sponsored this year by Sisters Kiwanis.

The team goal is to put together a team to complete a relay-style walk with at least one member of each team on the track at all times to raise as much money as possible through donations and fund-raising for the American Cancer Society. A yard sale is planned for this spring.

The Bend/Redmond event is typically held the third weekend in June. No firm date has been set for 2007.

A check of $300 was presented to Kit Stafford, Arts Discovery program instructor at Sisters Middle School.

This successful program is in its sixth year and is supported by the Sisters School District with classroom space and some materials. Stafford's compensation comes solely from donors.

Underserved youth at Sisters Middle School are eligible for this unique arts program. The students meet every school day with Stafford.

Local and regional artists are invited into the classroom where they conduct hands-on workshops immersing students in the process of a specific art medium. In addition to learning skills in the arts, students are engaged in self-discovery and expression, appreciation for the environment and community service projects.

The success of the program is measured in improved grades, self-esteem and increased attendance at school and school events.

Stafford is still in need of funds to fulfill this school year's program.

All donations to Sisters Middle School Arts Discovery Program are tax-deductible through the Sisters Schools Foundation.
