Landis sets more records

Tom Landis of Camp Sherman continues to tear up the record book in Masters' swimming.

He smashed two world swimming records in the 65-69 class on March 10 in a long course meet in Victoria, British Columbia.

Landis broke an 11-year-old record of 2:21:74 in the 200 meters by more than three seconds with a time of 2:18:54.

He also broke the 400-meter record of 5:01:81 with a time of 5:00:26.

Landis set records in a meet two weeks before.

"I've been on a pretty good roll," Landis said.

"One thing that astounded me is that I'm swimming faster than I was when I was 60."

Landis said he is not sure what he can attribute the improvement to, but he cited the efforts of his training partner Kris Calvin to keep him pushing.

Landis also noted that he took a couple of months off for some strenuous backpacking that gave him a break but also put him in top cardiovascular shape.

The swimmer is shifting his focus from setting international records to training for state masters championships in April and the national masters championships in May.

International records can only be set in meters and these races are measured in yards, so Landis is working on being competitive in the races.
