City Hall to get new paint job

Even as the first brush strokes were committed to the exterior paint job on the new Sisters City Hall, citizens started complaining. With rare exceptions, nobody liked the light green color. Some likened it to pea soup; others were less complimentary.

It was all apparently a mix-up - one the city hopes to sort out soon with a new paint job.

The city council discussed the matter last Thursday, original paint sample board in hand. The sample the council had approved was a much darker green, with more blue in it - a kind of sage color more in keeping with the Western theme.

The paint that ended up being the body color was originally supposed to be an accent, and the trim is a different shade entirely.

Somehow, the painting specifications did not match the approved samples. The city is currently sorting that out.

City manager Eileen Stein told the council that "the architect (Scott Steele Associates of Bend) said it was painted according to their vision."

The answer to why the sample and specs don't match will likely determine who will bear the cost of repainting the building.

"At this point I don't know who's paying," said Mayor Brad Boyd. "I know the city's not."

Stein told The Nugget the repainting won't happen immediately.

In other news, the council decided to seek proposals from artists to carve the 12-foot stumps standing in front of Bedouin on Hood Avenue. One of the trees fell in a windstorm, and the tree next to it was cut down as a safety hazard. The stumps are in public right-of-way and the council wants to see them turned into public art.

The council also announced that Sisters has been accepted for a Ford Family Foundation grant for a leadership development program. The grant was sought by an action team that evolved out of the Sisters community visioning process.
