News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Sisters managed to pull off a 4-3 victory in their match-up with Summit on Tuesday, April 10. The Outlaws underestimated Summit, who proved to be a dramatically improved team and worthy opponent compared to the last time the two teams squared off.
"Their defense worked well for them," said Coach Bill Rexford. "They played zone, a defense we hadn't seen before. Usually, my guys can run by a defender and get a shot off, but that didn't happen today due to the zone defense."
Rexford told The Nugget that Summit had one defender in particular whose sole purpose was to get as many hits as possible.
"He was huge, and he crushed us," said Rexford. "We never adjusted. We kept getting knocked down, and instead of adjusting and being intellectual players emotion took over. It was like Rocky in the 15th round leading with his chin"
The Outlaws won the game by sheer will and determination. Sisters did a great job of clearing the ball while Summit struggled in that area the entire game.
Doug Emberton scored the first goal of the game when he beat and dodged a defender with a hard and fast shot over the goalie's head. Nick Pepperling also scored with a quick bounce shot off the stick side of goalie.
Marcus Gaboni had his best game of the season. Gaboni took on three to four Summit players in order to score two goals for the Outlaws.
"I knew he had it in him," said Rexford. "But this was the first time I'd seen it."
Rexford again commended Trevor Summers for his excellent play on defense and told The Nugget he was the best player on the field.
"Trevor was doing what everyone else needs to do, and that is to think three or four plays ahead. He's never surprised, and he makes it look easy."
Goalie Thad Anderson had several point blank saves in the fourth quarter, and John Liming continued his dominance in winning face-offs.
Rexford said the win was a total team effort and everyone on the team contributed. Rexford told The Nugget that over the next week Sisters will be working on an offense that can beat a zone defense.
The Outlaws will travel to Liberty on Friday, April 20.
