News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The boys lacrosse team shut out the Redmond Panthers 6-0 at home on Tuesday, April 24.
Sisters jumped out to a quick start and never looked back. At the half the Outlaws held a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Nick Pepperling and Nate Emberton. Sisters added four more goals in the second half for the shutout. Marcus Gaboni scored twice, and Nate and Norman Emberton each had a goal.
The Sisters' defense was stellar.
Midfielder Emberton said, "Our defense really communicated well today. We only allowed Redmond six shots on goal, and Thad (Anderson/goalie) blocked them all, and Trevor (Summers) was just amazing. He was all over the place and got a lot of ground balls."
Coach Bill Rexford noted the play of Dominic Nieri, Nate Emberton and Michael Christiano.
"Dom had 10 ground balls today and has led the team in ground balls and shots for the last three games. The shots just aren't showing up on the scoreboard yet. I really believe he (Neiri), Ashton (Simms), Shawn (Maurer) and Marcus (Gaboni) are about to break through."
Nate Emberton was able to rejoin the team after being out several weeks due to a knee injury.
"It was good to have Nate back," said Rexford. "He's very aggressive and scored twice for us today. He just needs to learn to channel his energy so he can be even more aggressive."
Rexford has been especially pleased with Michael Christiano's perseverance.
"It's been a frustrating start for Michael because of injuries, but he's stuck with it, and now he's contributing with hustle, tenacity and guts," said Rexford.
Although the Outlaws outshot the Panthers 42-6, they were beat in the penalty box. Sisters spent nine minutes in the box compared to Redmond's four minutes, and Rexford said that is something that has got to change.
The Outlaws will host Hermiston, the No. 2 team in the High Desert League, on Friday, May 4.
