Boys golf squad ties for seventh at State

The boys golf team ended its season with a seventh-place tie with Molalla at the 4A State Tournament held at the Stone Creek Golf Course in Oregon City, on Monday and Tuesday, May 14-15.

Phoenix placed first (603), Marist second (613) and Brookings Harbor took third at 651. Sisters and Molalla finished with a score of 673. Marist's Robbie Pitts earned individual medalist honors with a two-day total of 143.

At the end of day one, Sisters found themselves tied with Siuslaw for fifth place.

Michael Reeve shot a two-over-par 74 and was tied for the fifth-place spot overall. Reeve parred 10 of 18 holes and birdied three.

Reeve told The Nugget that after day one he felt like he could be a contender for the No. 1 spot.

"On the fourth hole I drove it 478 yards to the green in two shots and then hit a 20-foot putt for eagle, but it lipped out. I tapped it in for a birdie," said Reeve.

Evan Mitchell shot an 86 and remembers his birdie of the day.

"I got the birdie on the eighth hole, which is a par five and 508 yards. I hit a really good drive, and then on my second shot I got to within 50 yards of the green. I hit a wedge 10 feet from the hole and then got a good putt for the birdie," said Mitchell.

Cody Farr-Baenzinger shot an 87, Billy Jacobson a 90 and Jonathan Standen finished one stroke back with a 91.

On day two of the tournament, Evan Mitchell improved his score by seven strokes and finished with a 79. Mitchell had two birdies on the front nine and finished at par (36).

"On the third hole (380 yard, par 4) I hit it down the middle about 250 yards. I took my eight iron and hit it to the fringe of the green and then made a 30-foot putt for birdie," said Mitchell. "I'd just bogied so that birdie felt real good and got me back to even par."

Reeve carded an 81. Reeve parred the first eight holes and then on hole number nine drove the ball 376 yards to the middle of the green. Reeve had a shot at an eagle, but unfortunately it lipped out, and he tapped that one in for a birdie. Reeve continued to play well until the 14th hole.

"On the 14th hole I hit a good shot that hit the green, but it had so much back spin on it that it rolled back into the hazard," said Reeve. "The bad thing was I did that three times, and on the fourth shot I clubbed up and then hit it over the green almost into the hazard on the other side. I finally chipped on and two- putted for 10. After that I knew I'd blown my chance individually, but I tried to finish strong and help the team as best I could."

Reeve finished the round with a birdie for the day's total of 81 and two-day total of 155.

Farr-Baenzinger shot an 86, Standen a 90 and Jacobson rounded out the scoring with a 98.

"I think the course was a little intimidating for our guys. We certainly didn't play to our potential. The exciting thing is we have everyone back," said Coach Jeff Barton.

Four of the Outlaws golfers were selected to all-league teams. Michael Reeve earned first team all-league and was Sisters' best player throughout the entire season. Barton told The Nugget he felt that Reeve really deserved the honor. Evan Mitchell was a second team selection and was a steady player all year and improved his game towards the end of the season. Billy Jacobson and Jonathan Standen were honorable mention.
