News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Lady Outlaws lost their chance at a berth in the state playoffs when they fell 0-5 to Pleasant Hill on Monday, May 14. Although the loss was disappointing the softball team has a lot to be proud of, including the best season for a softball team in school history.
In the match-up with the Billies, Sisters just couldn't get the ball in play. Becky Bremer and Ashley Huber were the only players to get a base hit.
Pleasant Hill scored runs on a couple of unfortunate errors with two outs on the scoreboard and only had one earned run in the game.
Coach Tom Mauldin did note that JJ Ashley, Jenna Sneva and Brenna Mooney had some exceptional plays and were standout defensive players.
"While the sting is fresh from losing to a team we beat twice earlier (9-6 and 9-1), the girls have a lot to be proud of. The preseason goal was to compete, and that they did. Two years ago the team was 10-runned often, and this year it happened only once, in our first game," said Mauldin. "Let's play Mt. View again, and it won't be 10-0. I guarantee the girls wouldn't let that happen."
The Lady Outlaws broke many records throughout the course of the season and ended their season with the most wins in school history.
Jenna Sneva set a new school record for a single season batting average of .419 and was the first softball player ever to have over a .400 batting average. Sneva also tied the school record of 31 for most hits in a season.
Sam Stoneback set a school record for strike-outs and struck out 143 batters in 116 innings. Stoneback also had seven pitching victories and broke her own school record of six.
Courtney Overstreet and Becky Bremer each drove in 13 runs, which was a team high for the season.
"The girls have to remember that we probably had the most challenging preseason schedule of any 4A team in Oregon and we played a half-dozen ranked teams along the way. Six of the teams we played are still playing in the post season, and that says a lot about the growth of our program," said Mauldin. "Yep, we were short on team speed, short on experience and short on knowledge of the game, but we competed. I couldn't be prouder of this group of girls."
The Lady Outlaws softball team finished with the best season in Sisters High School history and had six players named to all-league teams.
Junior Sam Stoneback and sophomore Jenna Sneva were both first team selections. Stoneback finished the season with a win-loss record of 5-6 and led the league with 98 strikeouts in 81 innings.
Sneva had a team high of 19 hits, 12 runs and 11 stolen bases. Sneva set a school record for single season batting average at .419
According to Mauldin, she is also the best drag bunter in the league.
Senior infielder Courtney Overstreet and senior catcher Becky Bremer were second team all-league selections. In league play Overstreet batted .390, made only one error at first base and had a team high of 11 runs batted in.
Bremer batted .326 in league play and threw out 18 runners who attempted to steal against her for the second highest total in league. Becky drove in nine runs in 12 league games and for the season had a team high of 13 RBI and batted .338.
Honorable mention went to junior third baseman JJ Ashley and sophomore outfielder Jenny Kaiser.
